About This Web Site

This website is focused on the basic relevant historical aspects of Iranian tea and coffee consumption. It is intended to describe the introduction and subsequent proliferation of tea and coffee drinking within Iran, and the respective political, economic, cultural and social impacts that influenced Iranian tea and coffee consumption from the initial period of the commodities' introduction in Iran, all the way through to today. As historian Rudi Matthee points out in his essay From Coffee to Tea: Shifting Patterns of Consumption in Qajar Iran, “The shift from coffee to tea in various countries, as well as the regional and religious differentiation between the two drinks, has thus far received little attention from historians, no doubt because many see coffee and tea as being too similar to warrant much separate discussion”. Many historians have overlooked the fascinating drastic shift in consumption patterns within Iran. Therefore, my research seeks to provide insight on a topic that historians have generally ignored in recent years.
